ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Science and Humanities plays a crucial role in the undergraduate experience. It forms an integral part of the institution, since its inception, with a mission of imparting teaching and promoting implementation of practical aspects of Physical Science and Humanities to build a solid foundation as part of the engineering education and plays a unique and distinctive role where the ethos of science and technology prevails. The Department offers Ist yr. courses for all the department students. Functioning under Prof. C. Nirmala, as Head of the Department, the concerns of this department can be said to be somewhat different from the concerns of the core disciplines of the Institute and it strives to bring a humane touch to technology and assist the engineers to develop themselves within the social context. English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are the four main streams of this department and its main intention is to lay strong foundation in the first year of any course, so that engineering streams become easily accessible to the students.

Shri A. K. Pattabiraman, Head, Accreditation Process for South India, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., addressing the students on Necessity of Today’s Competitive Global Market in the Inaugural Function.

VISION

To produce competent Engineers and Scientists by imparting quality Education in Mathematics, Science and Communicative English to develop Research Capability, Employability, Entrepreneurship, Human and Ethical Values so as to meet the challenges in the technology driven society.

MISSION

  • DM 1: To provide an academic environment that would help the students to acquire analytical and scientific knowledge through a teaching-learning exercise focusing fundamental concepts.
  • DM 2 : To prepare the students for careers in industries and mould them to become an entrepreneur and as a leader.
  • DM 3 : To sow the seeds of research in Engineering and Technology by providing facilities oriented towards applied science.

CHEMISTRY LABORATORY

Chemistry Laboratory is well located with an airy and spacious hall with a floor area 192 sq. meters, including a store room for safe keeping of explosive & corrosive chemicals in view of the laboratory safety. It is fully equipped with latest instruments and can accommodate thirty two students at a time. Each working table in the laboratory is well furnished & well connected with water supply. The experiments prescribed by Anna University have been carefully planned in cycles so that individual student can conduct single experiments independently and multiplicity of gadgets is avoided ensuring maximum resource utilization.

PHYSICS LABORATORY

The Department has an independent laboratory, for Physics, of 192 square meters with high quality instruments for gaining applicative knowledge. Physics Laboratory is central. Integral. It imparts the necessary theoretical knowledge and technical skill for all the budding Engineers of Akshaya to handle the precision tools and electronic gadgets there by laying the foundation stone for the future technocrats in the practice of their professions. The basic focus in the Engineering Physics Laboratory is to develop scientific temper and encourage students to innovate in diverse technical areas for better understanding of technical and engineering problems. Students will attend labs where they will see principle of Physics in action.

COMMUNICATION LABORATORY

Communication Lab supports students and faculty in achieving standard for effective communication, provides college students the opportunity to develop and refines their public speaking skills. Staffed by Communication instructors, the lab is open to faculty and students at convenient times. It reinforces what the students are learning in class and helps them reach their cognitive, affective and behavioral goals. Assistance includes a wide variety of brainstorming topics, crafting of speaking assignments, development of grading rubrics, small group delivery skills, role-playing, video-taped activities and suggestions for developing students’ oral and written communication skills and hone their voices for the betterment of their personal and professional lives, as well as that of the college, communities and world.

Students at their Communication Lab Listening to Audios

The Department of Science and Humanities shields the responsibility of providing a platform to acquire the competency and command over the language. It conducts courses like Business English Certificate (BEC) course and Language Enrichment Programme (LEP). The emphatic enthusiasm offered by the courses bridge the students and their freedom of expression to gain shape through the apt use of language and liberation. The students are trained through these courses to illuminate themselves in any sort of circumstance. They fit their place in the society through various levels of these courses. The students are exposed to the four basic communication skills  LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing) to unwrap the shield of ignorance and they are encouraged to pass through many levels to test their efficiency in all the four skills. Based on the skill set of students their degree of exposure is made to decide through various stages. The Department has been focusing the student- folk towards the light of lofty language skills, so they shall overcome their anxiety towards the English language; get rid of their tongue- tie and be able to communicate in English to its zenith. Trainers from Learning Edge Institute of Frontier Education Pvt. Ltd, Chennai visit the students to train them.
