SURVEY CAMP

2019-2020

A Special 10 Days Survey Camp was organized by our Department for the benefit of III year students.
The camp was conducted at various places in Ootacamund viz., Lovedale Estate, Ooty Arts College, Dodabetta Hairpin Bends and Botanical Garden. The survey helped the students get a working knowledge of Contour Surveying, Azimuth Determination, LS CS of a Road, Setting out Works, Traversing and Triangulation etc. The survey also enabled the students have an hands on experience on use and maintenance of Total Station, Theodolite, GPS Instruments, Levelling Instruments etc.

2018-2019

A Special 7 Days Survey Camp from 15 June 2015 to 22 June 2015 was organized by our Department for the benefit of III year students, to enable them get a field experience of surveying in a challenging terrain.
The camp was conducted at various places in Ootacamund viz., Lovedale Estate, Ooty Arts College, Dodabetta Hairpin Bends and Botanical Garden. 2022

  • The Department of Civil Engineering has organized a guest lecture by Mr. N Ranjith Kumar, Entrepreneur, Coimbatore to apprehend the students about the concepts of Vasthu in Civil Engineering on 6 th December 2022
  • A Guest Lecture on “CAD – Tips and Tricks” was organized by Department of Civil Engineering for UG Students on 18.03.2022. The lecture was delivered by Er.M.Vijaya Raghavan, Design Engineer, Nicety Shelters and Solutions, Coimbatore.
  • He listed out the commonly used commands in AutoCAD and then demonstrated how those commands can be applied in a quicker and more effective manner. He asked the students to try the same and showed how time could be saved with these tips and tricks.
  • Students will be able to utilize the power and precision of AutoCAD as a drafting and design tool used in the civil design and manufacturing industries.

    Prof.Pon.Rathnavel addressed students of Karunya University on the title “The Civil 4s” covering 4 Most important numbers, facts, acronyms & formula for Civil Engineers to emerge as a force(10.07.2019).

    Prof.Pon.Rathnavel served as a resource person for FDP on Emerging & Innovative Processes in Education organised by Coimbatore Institute of Management & Technology. He addressed on the topic “PERMA – Taxonomy for Happy Departments”(13.07.2019).

    30 Aug – Mr. Jacob.G.Podipara ,a retired Military Colonel and Placement Officer in Coimbatore Institute of Technology addressed the students on “Civil engineering works in military field”

    08 August 2015 – Mr.P.Anjesh, an expert buyer Communicator addressed the students on the topic “Acquiring Communication Proficiency to become better Engineers”.

    10 December 2015 – Dr.S.Kanagasundaram, a veteran in Town Planning and Building Approvals addressed the students on “Modern Building Practices and Rules”.

    15 December 2015 – Er.G.Ganesh, Managing Director, RG Associates, delivered a Guest Lecture on “Quantity Surveying and Estimation” from a practical perspective for the benefit of our students.

    SEMINAR

    As an integral part of our holistic department activities for our students, Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology has introduced the concept of Student Seminars into the academic system. Every day, a student is allotted a topic for which a seminar has to be handled for ten minutes. All the students took turn and handled the seminars, which provided the dual edge of enhancing technical knowledge as well as enhance public speaking skills.

  • One Day Workshop on “TOTAL STATION & DIGITAL GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (DGPS)” Organized by The Institution of Engineers (India) Coimbatore Local Centre, Under the aegis of Civil Engineering Divisional Board, IE(I) on 24-02-2023
  • Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology and Clean Toilet Organisation conducted the first stage of Clean Toilet Evaluators Programme. Our students were taught about the basic design, environment and safety considerations in toilet. They also got an opportunity to conduct mock audit of toilet. After 2 more stages, the students will be certified as evaluators of swachh toilets, The workshop was conducted under the supervision of Mr.D.Jayaganthan, President Clean Toilet Organization on 06 February 2020.
  • A Two-days workshop was conducted for all the three years to know about the advancements of softwares and technologies in civil engineering.
  • Two-days workshop on 3DS Max was organized by Dream zone for second and third years to make the students to gain the knowledge about interior designing on12.09.2017 &13.09.2017.
  • Two-days workshop on Total station was organized by CADD Leader for final years to make them to have the knowledge about development in technologies of Surveying measurements on 13.09.2017 & 14.09.2017.
  • A Workshop on “Disaster Management” by Mr Arumugam, Training Officer, South range, Tamilnadu, National Disaster Management Authority on 01/02/2017. At this guest lecture, he demonstrated the first aid technique and escape technique during flood.
  • A Workshop on” India’s Biggest Civil Championship (IBCC 2015 – Bridge Design Training)”, was handled by Mr.Shahbuddin Shaikh (Head Trainer), ARK Techno Solutions, Mumbai on 21st and 22nd January 2015. The workshop was conducted in association with IIT Mumbai.

2017 – 2018

WORKSHOP ON TOTAL STATION
AKSHAYA College of Engineering and Technology had conducted a two day workshop on Total Station Surveying for the benefit of IV year students. The workshop was conducted in association with M/s CADD LEADER and it enabled the final year students to get valuable hands on experience in carrying out surveying using state of the art Total Stations.

WORKSHOP ON BUILDING MODELLING
AKSHAYA College of Engineering and Technology had conducted a two day workshop on “Building Modelling including MEP” for III year Civil Engineering students. The workshop was conducted in association with M/s CADD Leader, with an aim to enhance building modelling skills for the students and ensure compatibility from different software like REVIT, 3DS MAX, MAYA etc.

WORKSHOP ON DISASTER MANAGEMENT & SAFETY ENGINEERING
AKSHAYA College of Engineering and Technology had conducted a two day workshop on “DISASTER MANAGEMENT & SAFETY ENGINEERING” for II & III year Civil Engineering students. The workshop was conducted in association with National Disaster and management authority to provide the awareness about preventive and protective measures, preparedness and organization of relief operations for mitigating the impact of disaster on human beings.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Our third year students participated in an one day Workshop on EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE organised by the reputed writer and thinker, Mr.Soma Valliyappan on 21 September 2015 and 25 September 2015. The workshop was an eye opener in dealing with emotions at the workplace as well as the family

TECH DAY

TECHDAY 2019

  • TECH DAY is the annual technical event of our Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology conducted in the backdrop of National Science Day.TECH DAY for 2019-20 was held on 28 February 2020. Er.Subhash, MD, KRS Builders was invited as Chief Guest. He patiently went through the projects and models developed by the students and declared the prize winners. The students also explained their innovative models and projects to the students and faculty members from other departments. This proved to improve scientific temper and also enabled collaborative learning.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PROGRAM
  • Anna University,Chennai approved Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology to conduct 7 days FDTP for the course CE6605 Environmental Engineering II. The course conducted from 07th to 13th December 2013 was attended by 25 faculty members from 13 different institutions. The FDTP was inaugurated by Dr.M.Isaac Solomon Jebamani, Professor & Head – Civil, GCT, Coimbatore. The resource persons were Dr.K.Akil (HICET),
    Dr.G.Manjula (SVS), Dr.K.Murali (SRIT), Dr.S.Govindasami (VSB) and Prof.A.Kumar (JCT). There were a total of 23 sessions in which various topics relating to the course were deliberated. The participants were also taken to Ukkadam STP for practical understanding of sewage treatment. The participants presented wonderful feedback and rave reviews for the FDP. Dr.T.Valliyappan and Mr.Pon.Rathnavel were the coordinators.

  • Anna University , Chennai approved Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology to conduct 7 days FDTP for the course CE6302 Strength of Materials. The course conducted from 07th to 13th June 2016 was attended by 18 of our faculty members. The participants were taken to the Strength of Materials Laboratory for practical understanding of the concepts.

  • Students and faculty members participated in 11th Dr.V.Ramakrishnan Endowment lecture on the topic “Nano Technology And Concrete Structures -Oppurtunities And Challenges” organised by IE(I) Local Centre on 29-01-2020.
  • Under the Aegis of Civil Engineering division Board, IE(I), The Students Chapter organised aTechnical Seminar on “Water Proofing in Construction” ACET Conference Hall on 17-02-2020.
  • The IE(I) Student Chapter of Department of Civil Engineering received the Best Student Chapter award from IE(I),Coimbatore Local Centre in Engineer’s Day 2019 Awards.
  • Prof K.Thirunavukkarasu was Conferred with Young Achiever Award in Engineer’s Day 2019. Engineer’s Day 2019 was Conducted on 16.09.2019 at IE(I) ,Coimbatore Local Centre.
  • Under the Aegis of Civil Engineering division Board, IE(I), The Department of Civil Engineering of Akshaya College of Engineering and Technology and the “The Institution of Engineers (India)”organized two day seminar on “All India Seminar on Evolving Trends in Structural Monitoring and Rehabiliation ”for the students from 27-08-2019 to 28-08-2019 at the college premises.
  • Under the Aegis of Civil Engineering division Board, IE(I), The Students Chapter organised a Technical Quiz on 17-09-2019. Prof.Pon.Rathnavel was the quiz master.
  • The Students chapter of Institution of Engineers was inaugurated on 21/08/2014 by Dr.G.Sundaraj and Er.S.Jagadeesh Kannan, PSG Tech Campus, Archetype design service India Pvt Ltd, presided over the function. They addressed the students over the company – expectations from the emerging engineers.
  • All faculty members have Life Time Membership in IE (THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS-INDIA) as a platform for advancement of engineering and Professional development
  • All the faculty members have Life Time Membership  in ISTE (Indian  Society for Technical Education) providing assurance of professionalism and  ethical and moral conduct to clients, colleagues and employers.

  • The Industrial Visit at Ultra Ready Mix Concrete, on 19.03.2022 from 10.30 AM to 02.30 PM, Ultra RMC plant is located at Neelambur, Coimbatore.

  • Students gain the following knowledge on RMC:
    1.Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) allows speedy construction through programmed delivery at site, mechanized operation with consequent economy.
    2.Production of RMC helps in minimizing cement wastage due to bulk handling.
    3.Proper control and economy in use of raw material resulting in saving of natural resources.
    4.Students visually understand the various process carried out at each stage of RMC Plant.
    5.Students understand and gain knowledge on various laboratory test and various types of concrete.

  • Our II and III year students visited M/s Gadli Industries on 17 March 2021 and learnt about the process of designing and manufacturing of UPC windows and doors. They also learnt about the application of these doors and their salient features.

  • The knowledge gained would help them to understand better the concepts of stress and strain in structural members such as beams, column, shaft and also shear force and bending moment in beams and the concept of theory of simple bending.

  • Also they learnt about the different construction techniques and structural systems such as masonry construction, flooring, roofing and the method of techniques involved in the construction of varies types of super structures.

  • The knowledge gained during this industrial visit will help the students to understand better some concepts related to courses such as strength of materials, Construction techniques and practice and Design of steel structural elements.

  • In addition to showing the varies process of manufacturing of UPC windows and doors, the company also took the students to their nearby site where the UPC doors and windows are installed. They explained the precautions and procedures to be followed for installing the UPVC components.

  • We thank Er.Selva and Mr.Mohammed Gadli of M/s Gadli Industries, Madukkarai for lucidly explaining the entire process.

  • The students of II, III & IV year Civil Engineering visited Mazhampuzha Dam to comprehend the basic components of a dam and their functions (01 February 2020).

  • The students of II, III & IV year Civil Engineering visited the construction of foundation of fly over to comprehend the reinforcement and aseismic engineering details of bridges at Ramanathapuram (15 February 2020).
  • The students of II, III & IV year Civil Engineering visited BUILD INTEC 2020 & WATER INTEC 2020, international construction and water expo organised by CODISSIA, Coimbatore (22 February 2020).
  • 09 Feb 2019 – Second year students visited the Amaravathi Dam & Thirumoorthi Dam for better understanding of the Contour Canal , Hydel Power Project , Underground Tunnel & Notches Sluice gate.
  • 09 Feb 2019- Third year students visited Salem Steel Plant for gaining knowledge about the manufacturing of steel process.
  • The students of II, III & IV year Civil Engineering visited the construction of M/s Adithya Avenue and understood the nuances of construction of slabs, beams, columns and lintels (14 July 2019)
  • 14 & 15 Feb 2017 – The II year students and the III year students visited the Post tensioned Pre-stressed bridge construction in IVRCL & KNR Constructions.
  • 19 August 2016 – The II year students and the III year students visited the Aliyar Dam Parambikulam basin for better understanding of the Contour Canal and Sluice gate.
  • 23 & 24 August 2016– The IV year students visited the Construction of Precast Bridge Elements in IVRCL & KNR Constructions.
  • 03 April 2015 – The III year students visited the Podanur Railway Junction to comprehend the fundamentals in laying, operation and maintenance of the permanent way.
