Preamble of the Webinar: Quantum computing represents an emerging computational approach that has the potential to redefine how medical images are analyzed and interpreted. Unlike classical computers that process data sequentially, quantum computers operate using qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This unique capability allows quantum systems to handle complex and large-scale medical imaging data more efficiently than conventional methods. Medical image processing involves demanding tasks such as image reconstruction, noise reduction, feature extraction, segmentation, and disease classification. These operations require high computational power, especially when dealing with high-resolution images from modalities like MRI, CT, PET, and ultrasound. Quantum computing can address these challenges by performing parallel computations and accelerating optimization and pattern-recognition processes. Quantum algorithms and quantum machine learning techniques can analyze intricate image features and correlations that are difficult for classical systems to process in a reasonable time frame. One promising direction is the use of hybrid quantum–classical frameworks, where classical computers manage image acquisition and preprocessing, while quantum processors handle optimization, feature mapping, and classification. Such systems can improve the accuracy of detecting abnormalities, including tumors, lesions, and neurological disorders, while reducing processing time. Quantum-assisted image reconstruction techniques can also enhance image quality by minimizing noise and improving contrast. Although large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers are still under development, research experiments and simulations indicate strong future potential in healthcare applications. As quantum technology advances, its integration with medical image processing could enable faster diagnoses, more precise treatment planning, and personalized healthcare solutions. In the long term, quantum computing is expected to complement classical imaging systems, contributing to smarter, data-driven, and more reliable medical diagnostic tools.
